Our client is an engineering consultancy working predominantly in the nuclear and defence sectors. They are currently looking to recruit a Process Engineer on a contract basis to join a site based team at Hinkley A power station in Somerset,

This role is primarily associated with project delivery for the retrieval and processing of ILW and will include:
Support of Technical Optioneering processes
Assessment of intermediate level waste streams
Development of summary sheets for processes applicable to intermediate level waste streams
Definition of waste processing step requirements including development of process flow sheets, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and plant layouts
Modelling of waste processing step behaviour including mass, activity and energy balances
Development of process descriptions
Support of engineering development of a waste processing capability from conceptual design through detailed design and support for construction and commissioning planning including: process calculations, process monitoring, consequence assessments, safety case input, commissioning documentation
Support procurement of engineered systems including input to and preparation of technical specifications and tender assessments.
Support identification of Hazards associated with the design of new systems or modifications to existing systems.

Knowledge and Expertise
Experience with front-end definition work for process plant selection.
Experience with various different technologies to support characterisation, handling, treatment, packaging and recycling of radioactively contaminated ion exchange resin, sludge, sand, desiccant, metals and activated materials.
Experience with the ASPEN modelling system
Experience with requirements for design of equipment and systems used for handling, treating, packaging and recycling of radioactive wastes.
Understanding/experience with Engineering/Design Processes.
Understanding/experience with UK regulations for handling, treatment and packaging of radioactive waste (EA, NII, RWMD(NIREX)).
Understanding/experience with UK/International requirements and technologies for materials processing.
Familiarity with the Safety Case process required by the NII.
Familiarity with HSE and CDM regulations.
Familiarity with EA regulations.
Familiarity with BS and Nuclear standards.
Familiarity with UK based Nuclear Power or Fuel Reprocessing Plants, particular knowledge of core components, fuel management and liquid treatment systems.

Qualifications
The candidate should hold a degree in engineering or science.
The candidate should be chartered in an Engineering discipline, Chemistry, Metallurgy or Physics.
The candidate should have at least 10 years of Engineering/Design experience in the nuclear industry. Equivalent experience in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical or specialty metals industries will be considered.
